Planning and Zoning Commissioners Workshop scheduled

MARC will host a one-day workshop for Planning and Zoning Commissioners on Friday, September 26, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Doubletree Hotel, 1301 Wyandotte, in Kansas City, Missouri. The workshop is designed for volunteer planning commissioners — new and veteran — who want a better understanding of how to build successful communities.

More than 100 cities and counties in the Kansas City metropolitan area have appointed boards charged with the responsibility to review development proposals for zoning, subdivision and plan approval. These volunteer boards are often composed of interested citizens without formal training in planning issues. This workshop will help commissioners deal with increasingly complex growth and development issues in their communities.

The Planning and Zoning Commissioners Workshop is the first in a series of programs and events that will build on the work of MARC’s Creating Quality Places initiative — a program aimed at fostering the creation of quality places and a better quality of life in neighborhoods and communities throughout the Kansas City region.

The keynote speaker for the workshop is Greg Dale, AICP, who has extensive experience in planning, downtown revitalization, land use regulations and implementation. He has managed planning projects throughout the Midwest and West, and serves in a number of leadership positions with planning and community organizations. He is also experienced in the legal aspects of planning and zoning and has coordinated the approval of various development projects. Greg is a frequent trainer for planning officials around the country, and is past president of the Ohio Chapter of the American Planning Association.

The fee for the workshop is $75.00 per person, which includes lunch and materials. A discounted rate of $65.00 each will apply for three or more attendees from the same jurisdiction. A limited number of scholarships are available for those who would otherwise be unable to attend. Call 816/474-4240 ext. 234 for details or e-mail gti@marc.org for details.

Missouri River Relief Event

Looking Toward the River
Kansas City: Saturday, September 13, 2003

Kansas City is experiencing a renaissance on it's riverfront. Industrial districts are becoming lofts with river views, and concrete wastelands along the river are being transformed into city parks. River accesses are being constructed; trails, boat ramps and pedestrian piers are reconnecting people with their river. And the entire city is looking toward the Missouri River in anticipation of the 2004 Lewis & Clark Commemoration events.

What a great time to clean up the Missouri River.
  • Clean-up time: 10 am to 5 pm, Saturday, September 13, 2003 (Sunday, September 14 is a rain day).
  • Project headquarters: Berkeley Park, on the river at the base of the Paseo Bridge, will be the base of operations for activities taking place up and down the Missouri. Registration begins at 9am.
  • What we're doing: River survey crews will be defining the exact boundaries of the clean-up area through the summer, but the clean-up is certain to concentrate on a core area from La Benite Park in the East to Parkville in the West. Several miles of the Kansas River will also be cleaned up.
  • River festival: While the river clean-up is going on, there will also be a water festival in Berkeley Park. This will be a great opportunity to learn more about water quality and watershed issues. The water festival will also feature entertaining dispays and live music.
This is a perfect opportunity to get out on the Big Muddy and participate in a little hands-on activism.
