Scientists Discuss Hydrogen as Alternative Fuel

Kansas City , Mo. — As President Bush’s hydrogen initiative strives to reduce U.S. dependence on foreign oil, scientists have stepped up efforts in recent years to develop alternative automotive fuels.

David Bodde, former vice president of Midwest Research Institute now senior fellow at Clemson University , and Michael Heben, of the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory, will discuss the challenges of switching to a hydrogen-based economy in MRI’s final 2004 Salute to Science Seminar.

Their presentation is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. , Wednesday, Dec. 8, at Midwest Research Institute’s Arthur Mag Conference Center , 4920 Cherry St. , Kansas City , Mo.

In discussing "The Fight for the Future,’’ Bodde will focus on the competitive transition now taking place in the auto sector from the internal combustion engine to the hybrid electric vehicles and, ultimately, to the hydrogen fuel cell vehicle.

NREL senior scientist Mike Heben and colleagues are in the forefront as science tries to unearth new ways to harness hydrogen and find clean, economical ways to store it—both for use in the transportation industry and for electricity production.

Heben, team leader for NREL's nanostructured materials group, has spent 14 years at NREL in the Center for Basic Sciences and the last 12 working on hydrogen research projects funded by the Department of Energy's (DOE) Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE). Other projects in the group looking into charge and energy in nanoscale systems and properties of new membranes are funded by DOE’s Office of Science. MRI has managed NREL since 1977.

Heben graduated from John Carroll University in 1984 with a B.S. in physics, from Stanford University in 1986 with an M.S. in materials science and engineering, and from California Institute of Technology in 1990 with a Ph.D. in chemistry.

At Clemson University in South Carolina , Bodde holds a joint appointment in the College of Business & Behavioral Science and the College of Engineering & Science, and is a Senior Fellow of the Arthur M. Spiro Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership.

With extensive experience in energy policy and creating new businesses from technology, his current research focuses on the role of entrepreneurs in the innovation and commercialization of energy technologies.

Prior to joining Clemson, Bodde held the Charles N. Kimball Chair in Technology and Innovation at the Henry W. Bloch School of Business and Public Administration at the University of Missouri–Kansas City. From 1991-1996, he was MRI corporate vice president and president of MRI’s for-profit subsidiary, MRI Ventures.

He holds a Ph.D. in Business Administration from Harvard University; M.S. degrees in nuclear engineering and management, both from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology; and a B.S. from the U.S. Military Academy.

To attend the seminar, please contact Laura Luckert, 816-360-1902, at Midwest Research Institute.

MRI is an independent, not-for-profit research organization with 1,200 employee s nationwide. Established in Kansas City in 1944, MRI performs research for government and industry in National Defense, Health Sciences, Energy, Biological Sciences, Analytical Chemistry and other areas. MRI has managed the National Renewable Energy Lab (NREL) in Golden, CO, for the U.S. Department of Energy since 1977.  For more information, visit www.mriresearch.org

Training Workshop on New Stormwater Management Tools
October 27 and 28, 2004
Old Shawnee Town Hall
11110 Johnson Drive
Shawnee, Kansas

Cost: $95 for one day, or $145 for both days. This includes continental breakfast, lunch, handout materials, and CD copy of APWA 5600 and the Best Management Practices Manual (BMP). Participants can choose to attend one or both days.
(Pay online)

In November 2003 the Kansas City Metro Chapter of the American Public Works Association officially adopted two new stormwater management tools: a revised set of engineering standards (APWA 5600), and a BMP Manual for Stormwater Quality. These tools were developed over a two-year process to guide the region toward a more environmentally sound stormwater management system. This workshop introduces the new documents and shows how they can be applied during the site planning, design and development process. This workshop is designed for planners, engineers or professionals involved in stormwater design and/or land development.

DAY ONE 9:30 a.m.- 2:30 p.m. (Registration 9:00 a.m.)

The first day is structured to appeal to engineers as well as planners, landscape architects, natural resource professionals, and others in non-engineering disciplines. Presentations will include an overview of the new design guidelines, followed by detailed discussions of how they can be used to protect water quality and stream health. During much of the day, interactive presentations will focus on the BMP Manual using various exercises to demonstrate the manual's application in the site design process.

DAY TWO 9:30 a.m.- 4:30 p.m. (Registration 9:00 a.m.)

The second day will focus on revisions to APWA 5600. It will cover all key changes to local stormwater design standards. The most significant revision to local standards was based on strong consensus to protect natural, open channels. As a result, a significant portion of the day will focus on both good and bad examples of stream protection practices.

The revised standards and manual can be downloaded from the APWA Web site, and related project documents can be found on the MARC Web site.

To register e-mail gti@marc.org, call Bev Werden at 816-474-4240, or complete the online registration form. Space is limited; registrations will be accepted until the workshop is full.

Major renovations to residential lofts, neighborhood buildings, and the surrounding streetscape developed in conjunction with the new Library sub-district offer a neighborhood environment within the heart of downtown Kansas City.

Come hear about and see the new home of the Kansas City Public Library’s Central Branch and neighboring Library Lofts.  Speakers will discuss details of building renovation, project financing, and area loft development, and will lead tours of Library and Library Lofts.

Building for Tomorrow: The Changing Face of Housing

Friday, March 19, 2004
Bartle Hall Room 4201
301 W. 13th Street, Kansas City, Mo.
Registration and Continental Breakfast 7:30 a.m.
Program starting at 8 a.m.

Despite the recent boom in new home construction powered by low mortgage rates, metropolitan areas across the country including Kansas City are facing fundamental challenges in the future. Changing demographics and household characteristics, critical supplies of workforce housing, low-density land use, stagnant development patterns, a lack of housing policy agendas and a shortage of housing choices pose questions to how housing can support growth and a strong economy.

The Changing Face of Housing seeks to examine the challenges facing housing and how development patterns can help create sustainable communities. John McIlwain, Senior Resident Fellow with the Urban Land Institute in Washington, D.C., will address issues including workforce housing and the challenges many communities are now facing. He will examine how the increasing shortages of workforce housing are undermining local economic development efforts while increasing traffic congestion. He will review future trends in affordability in the face of rising housing costs and the fundamental restructuring of the U.S. job markets now underway, and local policy options to meet these challenges. Frank Lenk, Chief Economist for the Mid-America Regional Council, will present preliminary findings from the first of several reports on the characteristics of housing in metropolitan Kansas City. The research is part of both MARC's “More Choices in More Places” initiative and the efforts of the Housing Choices Coalition of Greater Kansas City.

The forum will take place at Bartle Hall, site of the 2004 Greater Kansas City HOME SHOW, presented by GMC, and Flower, Lawn and Garden Show produced by the Home Builders Association of Greater Kansas City. A special feature of this year's show is a full-size replica of an urban loft showcasing the latest in downtown living and design. The exhibit will offering information on various downtown housing projects including displays from the Downtown Council and Kansas City, Mo., on upcoming projects planned for the area. Attendees to the Focus on Housing forum will recieve a complimentary ticket to the show.

Registration: $10 / $5 for students
Reservation Deadline: Tuesday, March 16
